The controversy of using human steroid has been a few years; it has no common conclusion to this issue in pro-sports. The most popular argument that steroid using is not a nature enhancement for the pro-competition; it violates the "fair principle" of sports. In the article, author made two points: first, set the regulation for the steroid in pro-sports like tobacco and alcohol: restrict for teens and children, but free for adult, second, the steroid may be applicable to horse racing.
Let's imagine it: there is no any steroid regulation for every adult sports player, Barry Bonds may hit more and more homeruns than his career year in coming seasons; Michael Jordan may continue his legend until right now……how amazing like this!
There will be a good chance to see that if opening the restriction of the steroid, but anyone can promise that every sports player could get the same treat for this opening?
It's not only about aspect of sports players, but also many other professions. For a simple example: assuming there are supply and demand in the medicine factories and players, every player want to be the best level of their area, when they make the better performance based on steroid, they have the benefit-risk relationship with factories, so, the worse thing could happen like that: business entity entirely control the result which they want through the drugs, the sports lose their original sprit of competition.
The author also mentioned another viewpoint about steroid application in horse racing, before my opinion, I acknowledge that I don't have any idea about horse racing, but I have some common sense. Anyone would breed his child for drug, make him stronger in short term, but undermine his health, even his life in long term? You must be kidding me. I mean, I don't think there is any difference in horse if we will be convicted by "child abuse" in people. It's a big development to breed a horse, just like raising a child. It takes a lot of work to train the horse, make the rider get familiar to the horse, but it take few time to destroy everything through drug abuse.
It is not simple as something in laws, there are many potential "moral corruptions" beyond steroid using, and morality is fundamental of sports. Before finding a perfect solution to the problems addition to human steroid, we should take a conservative attitude to this issue. I agree the recommendation of professor: put the steroid to the regulation of other drug, maybe it's a better choice to put it to the same level with heroin, cocaine in pro-sport.
